Did y’all know that only 3% of business owners identify as Black in the United States? Fun fact, that’s a low number. Unfortunately, Black Entrepreneurs still face disparities in funding from banks. Black businesses are 3-5 times more likely to be considered high risk. It’s challenging running a business as is but when face with such disparities, it becomes even more difficult. Because of this, there’s still a large racial gap in both wealth and representation which is why supporting Black Businesses are important.
Representation matters for everyone to see themselves as something great. In terms of the economy, it helps close in that large racial wealth gap by building local economies. Building local economies creates jobs, promotes innovation, and helps preserve culture. Much like Black culture, American culture in general is not a monolith. In terms of the country being considered a melting pot it’s also important to learn and appreciate other cultures. Black culture has a lot to offer through local black businesses and it is essential to support in any way we can. In all honesty, the United States has a record of ethnocide and cultural genocide, by forced assimilation.
Therefore, I have decided to add Black Bizness as one of my series for my blog. As I explore, I will be finding and highlighting Black owned businesses and sharing my experiences. I believe this journey will be fun and educational. I hope throughout this series you may feel connected or inspired as well! Stay Tuned!
